The goal of this article is to help you understand what you need for carp fishing, and explain what the kit does.

I’ve been there, believe me. You walk into a tackle shop and get overwhelmed as to what you need, then end up getting talked into buying a load of expensive rubbish you don’t need. And, as soon as you show and experienced angler what you’ve bought, they’ll likely tell you to throw it in the bin.

I’ll demystify all of the different types of carp fishing equipment and help you understand what you need and what you don’t need.

Firstly we’ll run through the essential kit, and then towards the end of the article, I have added a list of things you will need if you go fishing overnight, and I have added some nice-to-have items that you may want to buy over time if you have spare cash burning a hole in your pocket.

I’ve also linked to other articles on this website so you can click the link and get a deeper understanding of each element.

Whether you’re hoping to catch silvers or take on the challenge of deep-reservoir fishing, fishing can be very challenging to start. The rapid growth of the game has led to the emergence of different tackles and tactics.

In this article, we’ll talk about the various steps that you need to take to get started in order to catch a fish. Hopefully, by the end of this article, you’ll have a good understanding of the sport and have enough knowledge to start fishing for your PB carp.

Basic Carp Fishing Equipment

Technically, the only equipment that a person needs to catch a fish is a rod, a reel, a fishing line, a net, hooks, bait, and a license. But having more equipment and investing in the sport will give you more options and catch you more fish. Most experienced fishermen already have these basic items. In this article, I will talk about how to set up your equipment for catching fish.

Getting Serious About Carp Fishing?

If you are getting serious about carp fishing you are going to need more kit. My suggestion is for you to buy the equipment over time, and try to buy quality gear each time so you don’t have to buy twice.

This is going to be a long article due to the amount of gear that is now on the market, but you should work your way through the list and pick the things you think you need, come back at a later date to see what else you might need.

Carp Fishing Equipment List

Carp Rods

If you start with two rods, then you’ll have a better chance of catching fish. Some people, on the other hand, fish with three or even four rods when abroad.

A good rod is about 12 feet long, and it should have a test curve of around 2.5 pounds. This will allow you to cast a long way without snapping the rod in half. The larger the test curve, the more powerful and capable the rod will be but the less forgiving when fighting carp. You won’t have to go long distances to catch fish in most lakes, but if you are planning on fishing reservoirs, you’ll need a strong rod to reach the fish.

Carp Reels

You also need to consider the type of reel that you’re planning on using. Usually, these types of reels come in different sizes. For instance, a 10,000 would cover most of the situations that you’re going to be in when fishing.

Free Spool / Bait Runners

These types of reels feature a drag-tension mechanism that allows the fish to swim away whenever it takes the bait, but it can also be used to regain control after one turn of the handle. This is ideal for beginner fishing.

Big Pit

Large-sized reels, such as the Big Pit, are ideal for fishing large lakes. They feature a drag-control mechanism at the front, which you can manually adjust while fishing. This setup is cumbersome when you first start fishing.

Landing Net

The net you’ll use for fishing should be big enough to accommodate the fish that you’ll be trying to catch. Usually, nets come in various sizes, ranging from 36 to 50 inches. Make sure that it’s strong and long enough to support the weight of the fish, and it should float properly. Finally, you should have a mesh that’s fish-friendly, and it should have small holes to protect the scales.

Fishing Line

Before you start fishing, make sure that you ask for advice from the people fishing the lake. For instance, if the water is dirty and has a snaggy bottom, you might need to increase your line to 15 pounds.

The type of line that you’ll be using will determine how well you can catch the fish that you’re targeting. As you get more advanced, you might want to try braided or fluorocarbon lines, which do not stretch. If you’re a beginner, you should choose a monofilament line, which is strong and will endure the fight of a big fish. However, if the lake that you’re planning on fishing has a rough bottom, you might want to consider investing in a 15lb line.

Fishing License

For every fishing session, before you get your rods out, you need a license to fish. If you’re over 12 years old, and you’re planning on fishing in the UK, don’t forget to have a license. This is required on all lakes and rivers. If you’re caught without one, you could be fined up to £2500.

You can get a fishing license at any branch of the Post Office, or you can buy it online at the government’s website. A one-day license costs £3.75, while a year’s worth of fishing licenses is £27.

You should avoid buying from websites that are not affiliated with the Environment Agency. These could charge you a lot more for your license.

Rod Pod/Bank Sticks

You need something to rest your rod on, and it’s up to you whether you want a rod pod or a bank stick holder. The former is the most versatile type, and it can be set up anywhere. However, some people prefer to use their bank sticks on soft ground.

Bite Alarms

Although you could just sit and watch the drag clicking as the fish takes the bait, you might not be able to catch much fish due to the subtle nature of the action. A bite detector uses light and sound to alert you whenever there’s a movement in the line. This is useful if you’re fishing during the night or on an overnight trip.

A bite detector can also help you identify when a fish has grabbed the bait and is moving toward you without pulling the line out of your reel.

You’ll need one for each rod, as this will allow you to keep track of which one to grab whenever the fish takes the bait.

Tackle bag/box

There are a lot of tackle bags and tackle boxes to choose from but bear in mind that if you get into a habit of collecting gear, you’ll start to accumulate a lot of it. A big box or bag with plenty of compartments will keep all of your tackle organised. Smaller boxes can also be purchased to fit inside your main carrier. A sturdy box can also be used as a stool.

Fishing scales

Although most of us aren’t professional fishermen, we all love breaking a personal best. After a long, hard battle, it’s always satisfying to know that the fish that you were fighting was heavy.

It is also important to ensure that the scales are accurate so avoid cheap scales such as the scales you might use for your holiday luggage. Having the correct weight will allow you to remove any feelings of guilt that you might have.

When it comes to buying a new set of scales, it’s important to keep in mind that the quality and price of these items can vary. Although they only weigh a fish, it’s still possible to get a set that’s inaccurate or a dud.

Fishing Scissors

One of the most essential items that you should have in your tackle box is fishing scissors. Although some people may think that they need special scissors for fishing, this is not the case. Although fishing scissors are made to ensure your braid is cleanly cut, making it easier to thread the braid through the eye of the hook, they are worth the investment.

End Tackle

Terminal tackle is all that separates the rod from the fish. It’s important to make sure that you’re properly handling it so that you can safely retrieve the prized catch.

In this section, we’ll talk about how you can fool these smart, shy, and discerning creatures. Contrary to popular belief, the fish that you encounter in a lake can be 10, 20, or 60 years old, so they have the memory of an elephant.

Although it can be as simple as you want it to be, learning how to fish for large fish can be very enjoyable if it’s kept simple. There are hundreds of different types of rigs that you can choose from, and they all have varying characteristics. Before you start fishing, make sure that you have a few of these in your tackle box.

Learn more about the best fishing rigs – Click here

Bolt Rig

For most types of fish, fishing on a hard-bottom lake can be very challenging. Since the line is coming off the bottom, the fish will feel no resistance as it takes the bait. As it feels the weight, the fish will bolt.

A bolt rig is a type of fishing rig that uses a lead that is fixed to the end of the hooklink. This type of setup forces the fish to set the hook as it pulls the lead to its fullest extent.

The lead used in this type of setup should be heavy to set the hook well. The lead should be set so that it can detach from the line when it breaks. This ensures that the fish can’t become tethered. When a big fish drags a lead around, it can potentially cause the fish to become tethered which could result in the fish dying.

Chod Rig

The word “Chod” is often used to describe the various types of debris and weed that are found at the bottom of a lake. Given this context, it’s reasonable to assume that the rig was named after this debris.

The goal of the chod rig is to provide an advantage to those fishing in areas where the “chod” at the bottom is particularly bad. This type of rig will allow you to land a better fish by presenting your bait over and above the debris.

Setting up the rig correctly will allow you to cast it anywhere on the lake. It will also allow you to present your hook bait effectively.

The lead of the rig will sink to the bottom and the balanced hook will slide up and settle at the top of the debris or weeds.

The design of the rig makes it difficult for fish to “spit” the hook after you have it on the end of your line. This is one of the reasons why many people love using this type of rig.

Helicopter Rig

A type of rig that’s commonly used is called a “hinged rig.” This type of rig features a bomb lead that’s attached to a length of line that spins around the lead. This allows the hook to move naturally.

The name of the helicopter rig comes from the movement of the hooklink when it’s cast out.

The spinning motion of the boilie stop creates a great anti-tangle effect because it prevents the hook from wrapping itself around the leader.

The lead weight of the end of the line is also a great choice when it comes to making the presentation aerodynamic. It can be adjusted to ensure that the top bead of the hook is positioned properly over most types of lakebeds.

Hooklink Book – Rig Storage

A hook link book or rig wallet is a good way to store all of your used carp rigs. These are usually made from sturdy materials and feature top bars and pins that can be used to straighten out your rigs.

These are a must-have for any fisherman who wants to keep their rigs organized and ready for different presentations.

Baiting needles and drills

One of the most essential items that you should have when it comes to putting your bait on the rig is a variety of sizes. Also, make sure that you have a baiting drill with you for making a hole in hard hook baits and pellets.

Boilie stops

A boilie stop is a small piece of plastic or rubber that’s inserted into the end of your line’s hair loop to prevent it from falling off. They also attached your bait to your line to ensure the bait doesn’t come off when the carp sucks in the bait. It also ensures that your hook will end up where intended.

They are available in lots of different types, sizes, and colours to suit the type of rig and bait you are using.

Weights (Lead)

One of the most common areas of fishing that most people think is relatively straightforward is lead choice. However, when you walk into a tackle shop, you’ll quickly realize that there are a variety of leads available.

The question of which type of lead to choose will depend on the fishing situation you’re in. For instance, if you’re planning on fishing long ranges or over different types of lakebeds, a lead with a certain shape is ideal.

Knowing the type of lakebed you are fishing can help you choose the ideal lead for your target species.

Pear Lead

The pear lead is a great all-rounder and is used for various fishing applications.

These all-rounders are great for a variety of fishing situations. They’re easy to cast and are stable in flight due to their shape. The large rounded end of these leads makes them easier to feel when they hit the bottom.

The casting range of these leads is great, as they can be used in up to 80 yards. They’re also great for weed and silt fishing. However, the flat pear lead has a better shape profile and can provide a better anchor.

Flat Pear

The casting range of these leads is short to medium. They can be used on slopes, but can’t be cast big distances. Inline leads are great for simplifying the presentation of your lead.

The flat pear lead is great for fishing on the sides of gravel bars or sloping marginal shelves. Its large surface area helps it maintain its position on top of silt or weed. It’s also great on firm lakebeds.

Inline Leads

Inline leads are great for streamlined rigs as they can be used for casting and fishing on solid lake beds.

The casting range of this lead is great, as it can be used up to 80 yards. It’s also great for long-range work.

Distance Leads

These sleek and streamlined torpedo-shaped leads are ideal for casting long distances. They’re also great for fishing distances that are over a hundred yards long. Having a good weight distribution and stable flight characteristics make these leads ideal for various fishing applications.

Spare hooks

Always have spare fishing hooks in your tackle box as you cannot fish without a hook. Snapping your hook link or getting snagged and losing your rig is part of fishing. Being able to tie a new rig and get the rig back in the water will improve your catch rate.

It is advisable to have a few different styles of hooks to enable you to tie a rig to suit the lake bed you are fishing on.

A fishing swivel is a type of barrel that has freely rotating rings at each end. This type of join between the main line and the rig or a standard hook link greatly reduces the twist of the line.

A fishing swivel can be used to tie different types of fishing lines. For instance, a Uni knot is strong enough to hold a copolymer, fluorocarbon, or mono line. On the other hand, a Palomar knot is very easy to tie.

Most freshwater fishing lines are made with rolling rings that feature round eyes. These are commonly used for casting and other types of fishing. There are various sizes of these rings, such as 2 to 14, 14 to 16, and 8. For lighter ledgering and silvers fishing, size 12 is a common size.

A diamond eye fishing swivel is a type of ring that has a diamond shape. This ensures that the line stays on the axes of rotation when it’s rotated. This type of ring is ideal for reducing the twist of the line.

A double-rolling fishing swivel is commonly used for lure and spinning fishing. These types of rings can be made with two or more wheels that can freely rotate. This type of ring is ideal for the types of spinner known as Mepps and Toots.

A rig swivel has a diamond eye on one side and a round eye on the other. The hook link is attached to either side.

Split shot/lead beads

Since you may need a little extra weight for certain parts of your line, these small lead balls can be clipped onto it wherever you need them. Handy for when you are using pop-up rigs or need to pin the hook link to the lake bed.

Knot tester

There’s nothing worse than losing a big fish, and investing in a good fishing device will help minimize the chances of this happening to you.

The Pulla is a small tool that can be used to pull knots while holding a link loop or a size 8 swivel. This makes it easier to keep the line moving and to check that the hook is strong. The 2mm stainless steel hook fits through the link loop or the size 8 swivel, making it easier to hold the line.

Fishing Chair

There are a lot of folding and lightweight seats out there but bear in mind that you’ll be sitting on them for a long time, so buy the best one that you can afford. Before you buy, try to sit on it and see how comfortable it will be. It’s also important to make sure that it can hold your weight and not tip over on uneven surfaces.

Unhooking Mat or Cradle

If you’re not able to unhook the fish in the net, you should carry a mat that’s big enough to support the weight of the fish. This will allow you to safely unhook the fish without damaging it. You can also invest in a cradle to support the weight of the fish.

Carp Care Accessories

Most people who fish for large fish, such as the common carp, are aware of the importance of having the proper equipment to ensure that their prized catch is returned to health. This is because these creatures can live for a long time and can be caught multiple times.

Carp Care Kit

A care kit for injured or damaged carp contains a small bottle of either lotion or serum. It can be used to reduce the infection risk in the affected area.

A good carp care kit will help heal damage from hooks, lost scales, and puncture marks that can be caused by predators. These are all things that every fisherman should have in his or her kit.

The best care kit for injured or damaged carp is one that’s easy to use. Most bottles will contain a viscous liquid that’s just the right consistency.

The application of this product can be done using either a cotton swab or an included spray cap. Just give the fish a quick spritz and let it go back into the water.

Focusing on the scales and the mouth area are some of the areas that you should focus on when it comes to caring for injured or damaged fish.

Even if the damage is small, it’s important to treat it properly to prevent it from developing an infection. This can be very unpleasant for the fish, and it can be fatal in certain cases.

Unhooking tool or long-nosed pliers

Hook removal tools are necessary when trying to remove hooks from a fish’s mouth due to how hard it can be to do so. This is especially true when attempting to retrieve a hook that has been swallowed.

The usual way to remove a sharp hook is with your fingers. However, doing so can lead to skin damage and even get you bit if the fish has teeth. Using barbed hooks can also cause more damage.

Getting the hard-to-reach hook out of a fish’s mouth can be distressing for both the fish and the person who is handling it. A good way to do this is by using a tool that can be designed to remove the hook effortlessly.

The various tools designed for hook removal are designed to release the hook fast and efficiently. They can also help you return the fish to the water quickly.

Sometimes, the fish will swallow a large amount of food, pushing the hook to the back of its mouth, and preventing you from reaching the hook with your fingers. Hook removers can be used in these situations.

There are no single best tools when it comes to fishing hook removal. There are various types that you can use depending on the type of fish that you are trying to catch.

What Do you Need for Carp Fishing at Night

For those who only have a couple of hours to fish a day, day sessions are a popular choice. They can be used for a variety of reasons, such as after work, or on odd weekends. A day shelter can be used for fishing during bad weather.

A day shelter is an alternative to a brolly or bivvy system, and it’s typically easier to carry. It can be erected in just seconds, and it has enough space for you to store your tackle. We’ve reviewed a variety of day shelters for fishing, and they all feature simple brollies that you can easily fit into.

Learn more about the best fishing shelter for night fishing – Click here

A good fishing brolly is important if you plan on going out in all weathers, as the fish won’t stop biting just because it’s raining. A good fishing brolly is also a good choice if you’re planning on using it for a brew or a lie-down. It should be light enough to carry and quick to erect.

During a fishing session, you may have experienced a beautiful day before it turns into a dark and drizzly evening. Having a brolly with you can help protect you from the elements while you’re out fishing. There are a variety of styles and types of brollies that you can choose from.

When it comes to choosing the best fishing brollies for your bankside shelters, there are a variety of features that you should consider. Some of these include the quality of the fabric, the size, and the various pole types available. Depending on the type of fishing you’re planning on doing, the shape of the brolly will also affect its usage.

A good fishing bivvy will last you for a long time, so invest in the best one that you can afford. Some of the other factors that you should consider when it comes to buying a good fishing bivvy are its speed of erection and lightness.

A bivvy is a great choice if you plan on fishing for a long time. It can be used for different activities such as solo fishing or with a buddy. There are various types of bivvies that you can choose from, such as lightweight models that can be used for single-night trips or heavy-duty ones that can handle long trips.

After a couple of day fishing sessions, you might want to spend more time relaxing at the lake by doing overnight sessions. You’ll need a bed chair, which is a type of chair that can be used to fold down into a bed. These are usually available in a wide range, but you should always consider the best one for your comfort.

Having a top-end bedchair will allow you to get some much-needed sleep while you’re on the bank. While it may be intermittent, getting enough sleep can be as comfortable as possible. Having a good night’s sleep can help you feel refreshed and ready to face the day.

A bedchair is a type of flat-lined chair that can be used on the floor or off the bed. It’s ideal for people who are looking for a warm and comfortable place to rest after a long day of fishing. Most bedchairs come with multiple legs and are made of foam or firm materials that will cushion your body as you sleep.

A good sleep system can also be equipped with a sleeping bag, a pillow, and a padded section. This type of setup provides an ideal amount of comfort and support for those who need to get a good night’s sleep.

Getting the right bedchair can be a bit challenging, as there are thousands of options on the market. Before you buy a bedchair, it’s important that you consider the various features that will make it the best choice for your needs.

Sleeping bag

A good sleeping bag for fishing is also important, as it should be made from high-quality materials that are water-resistant. It should also have an easy opening so that you can easily jump out of the bag when you’re fishing.

A good sleeping bag is essential for any fisherman who enjoys camping out overnight. Even on the hottest days, hitting midnight to dawn can make you wish you had some warm clothes to keep you warm.

We believe that rest and comfort are important factors when it comes to fishing. Having a good night’s sleep is very important for an experienced fisherman, as it allows him to get back on track and make a successful start to the day.

Although a flask and a sandwich are fine, you should also consider how much you’ll be able to enjoy cooking and eating while you’re fishing at the lake.

Regardless of which features you’re looking for, a good fishing gas stove is a must-have. It can be used to boil your kettle or create heat for cooking. If you have a spare gas canister, you should get two or three of them.

For the winter season, I would suggest investing in a gas canister cover. This will keep the liquid from getting too cold, which can prevent it from properly burning.

Head torch

If you’re planning on fishing in the dark, then you need a good fishing head torch. This item is a must-have for all anglers. There are a variety of styles and models available on the market, so you can easily find one that fits your needs.

Most people who fish for big fish usually follow the rule that the biggest fish they catch is under the moonlight. However, fishing at night can be very challenging due to the darkness. This can make it hard to adjust your rods and reels, get the perfect picture, and even tie your rigs.

Getting the right headtorch for fishing is a must, but it can be hard to choose the best one due to the various features and batteries used.

Extra Kit for The More Experience Angler

Marker rod

A marker rod is a special type of fishing tool that will allow you to identify the type of bottom that you’re looking for. It can be used with a 4oz lead and a marker float to create a picture of the area. An 11-13ft rod with a 4.5lb test curve is ideal.

Spod rod

Whilst you can feed ground bait at a distance using a catapult. Sometimes, you want to keep the bait in a tight area around your hook instead of scattering it all over the surface. Casting a spod is a method of fishing that involves using a flying torpedo filled with bait. When it hits the water, the tip of the torpedo ejects the bait out of the back. If you want a dedicated spod rod, you should choose a 12ft with a 5lb test curve.

Finger Stall

The Casting Finger Stall is designed to protect the index finger of an individual against the effects of braided or monoline. It can be used by both right and left-handed fishing enthusiasts. This item is ideal for those who use their index finger to control and brake their line while casting.

The materials used in this product are durable and have quick dry properties. They are made from a soft leather material that is very thin compared to a regular leather glove, which allows you to feel your cast and line properly. Most finger stalls are equipped with a flexible and comfortable design, which is secured using a Velcro strap.

Although the naked eye can only see so far, you still need to rely on your binoculars to catch fish. These are the tools that will allow you to see more clearly and make a big difference in the fishing game. If you’ve ever used a pair of binoculars, you know that they can make a big difference.

These binoculars will allow you to focus on the fish much easier, and some of them work well in the dark. If you’re in the market for a pair of binoculars, we’re here to help you find the right one.

When it comes to choosing the best binoculars for fishing, one of the most important factors that you should consider is their waterproof properties. This will allow you to use them without worrying about getting dropped into the water. Even though some binoculars are more expensive, most of them are made of durable materials and can withstand the elements.

When it comes to fishing, you should get a pair of binoculars that have a magnification power of at least 7 to 10x. Higher magnification will make it hard to keep an eye on the fish, and you should get image stabilization if you want to use them. If you’re planning on fishing a lot at dawn, you might want to get a pair of binoculars with a larger objective lens.

One of the most important factors that you should consider when it comes to choosing the right binoculars for fishing is their image stabilization. This will allow you to see clearly. This will also allow you to use higher magnification devices without creating a blurry image.

Another important factor that you should consider is the price. Although you may not have to spend a lot of money on fishing equipment, you can still get a great experience with a pair of binoculars that’s on a tight budget. Even though binoculars will get better as the price goes up, you should still use them if you have a tight budget.

A Carp Barrow or Trolley

The best way to transport your tackle is by using a carp barrow. This item has helped me get more time to fish, as it eliminates the need for me to make several trips to the car. Large lakes can take up to an hour to walk back, making it an ideal choice for those who are looking to spend more time actually fishing.

The Water wolf is an underwater camera that you attach to your fishing line. It enables you to playback the video and see the underwater action.
