Three names cover most of the alarms on any UK carp lake, and they are not three versions of the same thing. Delkim, Fox and Nash sense a bite in different ways, price their ranges differently and suit different kinds of fishing. This is the comparison I give anyone who asks me which set to buy, based on a decade on Delkims and plenty of sessions next to the other two.

How each brand senses a bite

Delkim alarms have no roller wheel. A vibration sensor picks up the line moving across the head, which is why a Delkim will register a fish mouthing the bait before the line has moved an inch, why the sensitivity can be dialled from a hair trigger to a bolt-run-only setting, and why they never freeze in a frost. Fox and Nash use a roller: the line turns a wheel and a sensor counts the turns. It is simpler, cheaper to make and perfectly reliable, and on a bolt rig where the fish hooks itself and runs, a roller tells you everything you need. The Delkim advantage shows on cautious fish, drop-backs and slack-line fishing, where the difference between a single bleep and nothing at all can be a bite.

Delkim

The TXi-D is the benchmark and the price reflects it. Full sensitivity, tone and volume control, a receiver that vibrates and shows which rod, anti-theft, and the D-Lok quick-release that puts the head on a bank stick in a second. The cheaper Ev-D drops some adjustment but keeps the sensor. What you are paying for is the sensing and the twenty-year track record; the alarms on my rods have been through a decade of rain and frost without a fault. What you are not paying for is the accessory ecosystem: night lights, snag bars and hangers are all extras.

Fox

Fox covers the whole market, from the Mini Micron X and the Micron MXr+ that I specify in the beginner setup guide up to the RX+ and the NTX-R sets. The Mini Micron X is the best-value proper alarm on the market: sensitivity, tone and volume on the head, a compact receiver, and a build that survives being dropped. Step up to the Micron MXr+ for a full three-alarm set with a better receiver and more adjustment. Fox alarms are roller-based, so they are less sensitive than a Delkim at the extreme end, but for the bolt-rig fishing most of us do most of the time they are more than enough, and they are a third of the price.

Nash

Nash’s Siren range takes a different approach again: the R3 and R4 have a wide range of tones and volumes, remote-controlled settings, and a strong receiver, aimed at anglers who want a lot of features for a mid-range price. They are well made and the receivers are among the best for range. Build quality is good rather than exceptional, and the roller sensing puts them in the same bracket as Fox for sensitivity. If you are choosing between a Nash Siren set and a Fox Micron set, it comes down to which brand’s ecosystem you prefer; between either and a Delkim, it comes down to how much sensitivity matters on your water.

Which to buy

  • First set, day-ticket fishing, bolt rigs: Fox Mini Micron X. Nothing else at the price is close.
  • Regular overnighters, three rods, a receiver you can sleep on: Fox Micron MXr+ or a Nash Siren R3 set.
  • Pressured syndicate fish, slack lines, drop-backs, winter fishing: Delkim TXi-D. The extra sensitivity is the point, and they last long enough to justify the price.
  • Cold winters: Delkim. A frozen roller is a silent alarm; a vibration sensor does not freeze.
