Fluorocarbon, mono and braid hooklinks each behave differently on the lakebed and in the fight, and matching material to the situation matters more than picking a single favourite and using it everywhere.
What Each Material Offers
Fluorocarbon sinks well and is low in visibility underwater, making it a strong choice for clear water and clean bottoms. Mono, whether standard or specifically designed as hooklink material, offers a supple, forgiving presentation at a lower cost. Braid, soft or coated, gives excellent flexibility and can be tuned for stiffness through coating and diameter, suiting a wide range of presentations.
Presentation Over Silt, Gravel and Weed
A stiffer fluorocarbon or coated braid holds a rig proud of soft silt, resisting the rig sinking in and becoming masked. Over clean gravel, a supple mono or soft braid lets a hookbait behave more naturally with less resistance to a taking fish. In weed, a stiffer material combined with careful presentation helps a rig avoid becoming tangled in strands as it settles.
Hooking and Turning
Stiffer materials, including fluorocarbon and coated braid, generally help a hook kick and turn more positively on the take, working well alongside the shrink tube and kicker techniques covered in our hook mechanics guide. Softer materials such as mono and soft braid can still hook well but often benefit from an added kicker or line aligner to achieve the same turning action.
Abrasion Resistance
Fluorocarbon generally offers strong abrasion resistance for its diameter, useful over gravel and light snags. Coated braid also resists abrasion well, with the coating protecting the braid core from repeated wear. Mono is more vulnerable to abrasion damage and benefits from more frequent hooklink changes when fished over rough ground.
Tangles on the Cast
Stiffer materials such as fluorocarbon and coated braid generally resist tangling on the cast better than very supple mono or soft braid, which can occasionally wrap around the lead or mainline in flight. Careful casting technique reduces this risk regardless of material chosen.
Cost per Rig
Mono is typically the cheapest option per rig, followed by standard braid, with fluorocarbon and premium coated braids generally costing more per metre. For anglers tying large numbers of rigs regularly, this cost difference adds up over a season and is worth weighing against the specific presentation benefits each material offers.
Choosing Between Them
Fluorocarbon suits clear water, clean bottoms and situations calling for low visibility and good abrasion resistance. Mono suits budget-conscious, high-turnover rig tying and softer presentations. Braid, particularly coated braid, offers a versatile middle ground suited to a wide range of bottoms and presentations. None is universally best; matching material to the swim being fished gives the most consistent results.
